Thursday Thirteen - On Age and Aging

In light of last weeks anticipation of a milestone birthday and feeling blue in it's wake, I need to take the upper hand and plant myself firmly on the ground. I need to realize, as so many have reminded me, that age is relative and not a number. Great things await if only I leave myself open to opportunity.

1. Happiness is inward, and not outward, and so, it does not depend on what we have, but on who we are. ~Henry Van Dyke

2. Regrets are the natural property of gray hairs. ~Charles Dickens

3. I suppose real old age begins when one looks backward rather than forward. ~May Sarton

4. There is no cure for the common birthday. ~John Glenn

5. It is not how old you are, but how you are old.~ Marie Dressler

6. The older the fiddler, the sweeter the tune.~ English Proverb

7. Old age is like flying through a storm. Once you're aboard, there's nothing you can do.~ Golda Meir

8. The more sand has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it. ~Jean Paul

9. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. ~Douglas MacArthur

10. Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. ~Mark Twain

11. Age does not diminish the extreme disappointment of having a scoop of ice cream fall from the cone. ~Jim Fiebig

12. How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were? ~Satchel Paige

13. Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many ~Anonymous

All very, very true ! and according to n° 3 I must be a teenager because I never look back (only souvenirs of my son as a child) I always plan what to do next ! It's an excellent list !

With age comes wisdom - I should know I am already 4 years old (in human years - 28 in cat years). FAZ

Wonderful 13 there Gracie. It truly does make you think.

I use to complain when I had a birthday come around but as my mother would say, it's better than the alternative. Besides, age is only a number.

Not participating in TT, but wanted to comment.

All 13 are on the money. What a great approach to take Gracie. See why all of us love you? This is why. Have a great TT my friend. :)

The last one is really correct...some people never get to know what old age is like!! You are NOT OLD!! Remember once again I am 2 years older and I am not old..so you are not either!! Hear that Gracie!! Now go out there and have fun!! Sandy

Those are some great quotes and I agree with every one of them! I have always especially liked Mark Twain's take on it. Come to think of it, I like his takes on most everything!

I guess you just need to grow into the idea of being 60. I suspect you'll grow to enjoy it.

What a beautiful list, Gracie! A very wonderful and thought provoking TT. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent TT, Gracie. By the way... I still can´t believe it was your 6-0.

If you´d ask me to guess... 40... not exceeding 45 =)

Rock on, my friend!

I didn't do a T13 this week, but I came here for the photo hunt, and this caught my eye as I scrolled down the page. I have a milestone birthday in a few weeks -- I'm turning 50 -- and that seems so much older than 49!! I am going to copy these for inspiration, if you don't mind. :)

Like Barbara H, I came over here for the Photo Hunt and was diverted. I too had a significant birthday in June. I was 60 on June 19. There, I've said it out loud!

I have a great deal of difficulty with growing older, though possibly 50 seemed worse than 60. It seems nothing now. One quote I came across that I liked was "The trouble with being nearly 60 is waking up in the morning and thinking you're 31!"

I love your Thursday Thirteen, and the last one made me stop and count my blessings. Thanks.
