Manic Monday - Club

So many clubs - so little time! Okay, settle in on one aspect of the word "club" and go for it...

1965 - Dateline, Tijuana
One of the things that came to mind was a rite of passage for kids in Southern California. You had to make a trip over the border to TJ (Tijuana) and act like a stupid American teen, wanting to avoid the Tijuana Jail (Kingston Trio). There were four of us: me, my husband and another couple. The other girl was in America on a visa from Belgium and we were all 18 years old. And terribly stupid!

Liquor and cigarettes cost nothing compared to prices in the states, so the idea was to get as many cartons of smokes and bottles of booze back across the border. But first? You just have to stop in a nightclub... We picked one that didn't look too seedy and sat down, ordered drinks. Then the show began. I've never moved so fast in my life, getting out of there, followed closely on my heels by my Belgian friend!

I will not even begin to tell you what we saw but it was more than enough for us to split! The guys took a little more time leaving the establishment but we managed to "smuggle" several cartoons of cigarettes and some booze back home.

These are things one never tells their mother because then, she'd wonder what else you'd been up to!

WORD OF CAUTION: Stay out of nightclubs in Tijuana, especially today. Heads are rolling down there - literally.

Woo hoo - I don't think I told my folks anything about what I was up to at 18...
Sounds like a fun trip!

Great post. Things I've heard about Mexican bars come floating to my mind, and I wonder if what you saw had anything to do with a woman... and perhaps a donkey. YUCK! I always felt it was the wisest thing to say nothing to Mom & Dad than I had to when I was growing up. Come to think of it, I still feel that way, haha. There is still oh so much about my life that Mom would disapprove of.

I've gone to Mexico once since we moved out west in 1990. I have no desire to return, EVER, for the reason you just mentioned!

I went to Tiajuana and marveled at the street vendors, but never had the guts to go into a club --- not to mention the fact that I was with my Gram!
happy manic monday!
