Manic Monday - Shop-ping

"By 4:55, with no police officers in sight, the crowd of more than 2,000 had become a rabble, and could be held back no longer. Fists banged and shoulders pressed on the sliding-glass double doors, which bowed in with the weight of the assault. Six to 10 workers inside tried to push back, but it was hopeless.

Suddenly, witnesses and the police said, the doors shattered, and the shrieking mob surged through in a blind rush for holiday bargains. One worker, Jdimytai Damour, 34, was thrown back onto the black linoleum tiles and trampled in the stampede that streamed over and around him. Others who had stood alongside Mr. Damour trying to hold the doors were also hurled back and run over, witnesses said." (Courtesy of Meg Marco, of The Consumerist, and The New York Times)

I took the following from History Mike's Blog. He says so eloquently what I've been wanting
to say. To read more of his thoughts about this, please see his blog: History Mike

..."I am thoroughly disgusted with the sick, cold-hearted bastards who killed this man, but I am positively apoplectic at the self-absorbed idiots who think their Wal-Mart shopping experience is somehow more important than a lifeless human being. Yet these morons and thugs are only symptoms of the larger phenomenon of a consumer culture in which vertically integrated media fuel a relentless obsession with mostly-useless manufactured offal: a culture of shallow desires, greedy acquisitiveness, and dead human beings like Jdimytai Damour.

I apologize for the direction I've taken today, but I just couldn't let this go.

I wouldn't apologize. I agree. Mob mentality is a very scary thing.

You're right not to let it go. It was horrifying at the very least. My husband told me about this Friday afternoon because my sister and I had gone to a different Walmart that morning. She'd never been to one and wanted to see what it was like so we got there around 6 and the lines were mind-boggling. I was so disgusted when I'd heard about the Long Island incident.

No apologies needed. The mob craziness is appalling.

No need to apologize. I think that you're right on...what a horrible thing to have happened!!! I can't imagine that any sale item could be worth another's life! So sad!

I was totally appalled at this story. Unfortunately, this is how human beings act when they become a mob rather than just a group of people.

This is so very heartbreaking to me. I do not do the Black Friday shopping, mainly because the crowds scare me. People are rude, mean and don't care about others. Sad.

I think this was a perfect post for today. I hadn't seen any pictures so I'm glad you posted it.

Things are out of hand when things are more important than people.

I wouldn't apologize either; this whole thing has sickened me and just proves that our culture has gone totally off the deep-end when it's more important to save a few bucks on some plastic piece of technology than to act like civilized human beings.

Shame on the retailers for perpetrating this sort of thing by the "Black Friday" sales to begin with. There has got to be a better way to handle these things then to have people piled up outside of stores for hours on end just to save a few bucks. Perhaps a lottery system would be better and prevent other poor innocents who are just trying to do a job from getting killed in the process.

It is hard for me to get out of bed early in the morning to pee, much less go stand in line for hours, in order to get a better deal on a big screen TV.

People will do things in a crowd, that ordinarily they would not do on their own.

In this case, however, it cost someone their life.
