Cake, Cake and More Cake!

This sign is of Linn's Bakery in Cambria (central California coast)

I have a blogging friend, Levon, who owns a bakery. Now, you know how all of us bloggers just slobber and drool when we think of cake. Well, maybe I should say "salivate," sounds less ravenous. Anyway, please link on over and check out the photos of some of Levon's cakes...
There's one there especially for you cruisers!

When I reached the ripe old age of 17, I decided I was too smart to work for my mom and dad at our store at Knott's, so I ventured out on my own and found a job at Knott's - that's how far I ventured - at one of the food courts where they served buffet, hamburgers, etc., ice cream and a bakery! I worked all of the shifts at each of the sites and weighed about 120. How I managed to stay that weight is beyond me, especially when I would go in at 5:00 a.m. to help the baker set up for the day. Those huge vats of dough looked like swimming pools to me!

I excelled at the bakery. One day I was putting a loaf of bread through the slicer, turned around towards the counter. My boyfriend was standing there, and the sliced bread went sailing everywhere. Another time I was bringing in a huge tray of cookies and guess what. My boyfriend was standing at the counter. Yep, cookies flew all over the place. Funny, they didn't fire me and my boyfriend became my husband...

I hated working at the ice cream counter. This was in the days before polyester, so we wore nylon uniforms. You all know that Knott's is known for boysenberry products. By the time I had served a gazillion boysenberry sundays, floats, splits.... I was sticky from head to toe.

And so - I became a secretary. And now you know.

I checked out Levon...wow! Plus I went back and skimmed a few of his prior posts. What a nice guy! I'm following him now:-)

Well...I love this post b/c I've learned more about you, and you told it in such a way, I could just see all that boysenberry spread all over you! Hugs, honey...

Mmmm... I can smell fresh raised donuts being glazed now... they sold for a nickel and we would often stop on our way to school for a fresh, hot, dripping donut. I'm droooling now!

Big hugs xo

what a "sweet" story!

I didn't know your family had a store at Knotts? Can you say which one?

You must have been pretty smitten to keep dropping stuff...smile

Hi Ms. Gracie:

Thank you very much for including me and my bakery in your post; that is very thoughtful of you.

I really enjoyed your recollection of your work at the Knott's establishments - especially at the bakery. When I first started working at a bakery during college, I had several mishaps, but these were due to my own doing (or un-doing). I do not know who was more surprised at my being able to make a career in baking - my parents and boss or me.
With each of your posts, I appreciate more and more your passion for life and the way you capture the humour, irony and grace of life in your writing. You are also able to convey life's downturns - yet still infuse hope; hence, Gracie and Echoes of Grace. I am also happy about our shared interest in baking and baked goods. Speaking of baked goods, I need to prep for tomorrow and clean up the shop.
I bid you a great weekend. Take care of yourself.

There is no way that I am clicking over to Levon's page and drooling over cakes - not when the best I'm going to have for my sweet tooth tonight is a cup of tea. Well ... maybe just a little peek ...

I agree with Katherine, it sounds like you were quite smitten to have baked goods flying all over the place every time your boyfriend came into the shop! I can SO picture that, too!

I'm pretty sure I'd not have been enchanted with the boysenberry myself - or the nylon for that matter! I wish I could remember more about Knott's Berry Farm from the trip we took there when I was a kid but alas, that was too many years and too many lost brain cells ago. I remember little bits and pieces of it but unfortunately, that's it as 1965 was long, long ago I'm afraid!
