Manic Monday - Red
Having grown up in the middle of the "Cold War," tripping over the supply of bottled water and canned goods on our back porch that were kept on hand just in case we were attacked by the Russians, the slogan "Better Dead Than Red" comes to my mind. The message here is that one would be better off dead than alive under Russian rule.
I still can't hear an air raid siren without quaking a bit. We lived in constant fear that the dreaded "Rooskies" would be bombarding the beaches and sky. One of the best movies of that time was "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming!" Alan Arkin stars and you will be delighted at the humor to be found in this very serious subject!

I remember that too, but not this cold war, the cold war before that when Russians nearly attacked the states (Kennedy time) that was even more awful and I remember that whole Europe too was stocking sugar, salt, soap etc.

Thanks a lot for this moving echo, Gracie. I´m thankful for living in a country that is safe and free (now).
I was one of those children instructed to "duck, roll, and cover" as if hands over your head would protect you from atom bombs.
We made it through and at least got a funny movie out of it.

sarge and i were just talking the other day about how we had air raid drills in school. we went into the hallways and faced the lockers and put our hands behind our necks! what the heck good that would have done is beyond me! but we did it once a month...

Guess it's good to be prepared for anything though.
It's difficult for younger people now to understand that it was a time of real fear. Even I have trouble remembering, and my generation still practiced duck and cover under the desks for a time.
