Manic Monday - Independence

INDEPENDENCE
I've looked around briefly at some of the posts already up - you all are so imaginative and creative. A lot of the posts have been about America's independence from England, which we celebrate on July 4th. Some have used the song "Independence Day," by Martina McBride, which describes the horror of domestic violence and it's effects on children. No child should endure this and my heart goes out to all of you who have come through this long, lonely tunnel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The thought that keeps coming to my mind while thinking about all of the different ramifications of the word "independence," is that independence is not only individual but collective. It can be given and taken away. When you're young, you can't wait to become independent - free from your parents rules and regulations. Then at the other end of the spectrum, your hard-won independence slowly erodes and you become totally dependent on others again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It saddens me that it's very uncool in some circles to be proud of this country, and fly your flag high on Independence Day. I'm not cool so I don't care what people think. We fly our flag on July 4th and rejoice in our independence!

There has been so much anger here in the UK as we are so rarely allowed to fly our flag...in case we upset someone!!!! I think people should be able to demonstrate their pride in the country. Fly your flag high and be proud of it.

Ruth's comment is so sad, allowed to fly our flag???????????
With what is happening in England today, I just would not give a damn who I offended.

Well, I agree to our Furry Diva and mags - you are pretty cool, my amazing friend!

Fly your flag proud. I was allowed to join the celebrations on 4th of July several times when I was in the US - I loved it!

The flag flying is one thing that my husband is happy to be able to do in the US. This is his first independence day as a US Citizen and we proudly fly both the American flag and British flag...it's kind of ironic for him celebrating independence from the British...haha! But he's glad to be free from the anger, violence, etc. that Ruth was talking about in her comment.

Yes! I love that! I am proud to be American,too!! My neighbors across the street from me have a flag pole and fly OLD GLORY 24/7 and have a spot light on the flag at night. My neigbor served in Iraq for a tour of duty and all of us were so happy when he came home safe and sound! and I get to look out and enjoy seeing the flag flying in the breeze everyday!

My friend in California and I were discussing this very thing today as I am going to try to write an essay for a contest at work about what America means to me. It's been hard to find a starting point for this essay but I know that I want to be able to incorporate the fact that American means freedom to me on so many levels - the freedom to fly the flag, the freedom to disagree with my government should I choose to do so, the freedom to express myself.

Maybe your post has given me a starting off point after all!

I found a spot for my flag - and there's a light that is on it at night so I can leave it flying.

And I agree with the rest darlin. You are cool.
